I only have MAC products. I've successfully used my 2 original Chromecasts for a couple of years. I've recommended them to tons of people and given them as gifts.
For Mac users, get the equivalent Mac version. Chromecast Spontaneously Restarts. If your Chromecast’s video output is blacking out sporadically (as opposed to pausing to buffer), the Chromecast restarts altogether, or the Chromecast is stuck in a loop of rebooting constantly, this is the section for you. Check the Power Supply. This help content & information General Help Center experience.
Now I see that you no longer support OSX and I can no longer cast from Chrome on my computer. Fine, I'll use my phone.EXCEPT that's not working either. My wireless sees the device, but my TV says no signal. Yes, I've been through the reset factory data-unplug and replug the power-reboot the phone process until I'm sick of it. Do I just need to throw the 2 Chromecasts away and switch to Apple TV?
I can do that; I'm just disappointed that I may have to. Carmine Clemente 5/11/2015, 12:41 น. After resetting the modem & router, resetting the Chromecast to factory defaults, going back to an old iphone 4s and turning it completely off while the Chromecast rebooted, then powering back up, I was able to set the 2 Chromecasts up again. They are now recognized by iphone 4s, iphone 6, and Macbook Pro. Mind you, I had to do this sequence more than once. The first few times, I used my iphone 6 with IOS 9.1 and got the No Signal error after choosing the Chromecast in my wireless settings on the phone. I have no idea what finally made it work.
It would be helpful to know what caused the devices to stop being recognized in the first place. That might make the fix faster and easier if it happens again. I was very close to Freecycling the Chromecasts and purchasing a different casting device. Yann Van Uffelen 8/11/2015, 8:20 น.
I bought this because it clearly said on the box and advertising you could stream to a laptop. Now your saying I have to have a current smartphone as well to use it?
It won't work on older Android. There is no mention that you need anything extra to set it up in order to cast to a laptop in any of the advertising or on the package. This amounts to misleading advertising, and I'll be taking it up with the office of fair trade here in Australia to see what they think. Tina Spellman, 6:06 น. Thanks James. That is more than disappointing as we just 'invested' in putting these in all of our offices and creative suites and we use a lot of macs.
But I am guessing Google and Chrome won't care since they already got my money. It seems short sighted to me as I don't know any mac users who would switch to a crappy PC format for this feature when they can just buy another device that does support Mac. All this will do is alienate a whole market share with no real upside. I guess it's time to go shopping. It's a good device. David Giancarli, 13:59 น. '.but are still able to cast from your Mac OX/Chrome OS machine using the Google Cast extension in your Chrome browser.'
This statement is NOT true. After setting up my chromecast and it updating itself it successfully connected to my wi-fi. There are no firewall restrictions preventing casting.
HOWEVER in my UP TO DATE Google Chrome browser running on the latest Mac OSX it cannot find the device. Good-Bye google i thought you were different but looks like I'm going 100% Apple. Jacky H, 17:04 น. This doesn't work at all. Google completely screwed over every Mac user. Long story short, I needed to switch wifi connections, the chromecast app (which worked wonderfully when I set it up the first time) didn't work, the chromecast extension for chrome doesn't connect at all, so I assumed it might be an update issue. So I factory reset and now it's fucked beyond repair.
I'm told there's a chromecast app for IOS, but I can't download it because I have an iPod 4 which can't go up to IOS 7, which is what chromecast needs for whatever dumb reason. So now I'm sitting here upset that google killed functionality and I'm sitting with a $35 paperweight. Unless this is fixed soon, I'm going to tell friends/family/strangers to avoid chromecast, as functionality randomly disappears when you're using it. Paula Rogers 2/2/2016, 10:12 น.
My God, what utter crap. Two hours looking at a set me up screen and a non-stop searching for cast devices logo, for something that was supposed to be plug and play. Searched U-Verse help, searched Google Help, searched every type of help I could find. My Router is about 12 feet away. Found and installed the App, only to discover that it's too old (but up to date!) and finally see if I want to use this with my Macbook pro I'm just screwed. Oh, I can 'use' it with my MacBook Pro as long as I set it up with something else first!are you joking?
Seriously, are you joking? I am absolutely furious! This is information that should have been on the box, and it should have been the first thing I found and not the 17th, so I discover that all the other 'fixes' I've been trying were a complete waste of time. Yeah, I've got a $3000 computer sitting here, I'll just pop right out and get a $600 ipad so I can make a $35 dongle work.this is insane. I'll also mention that there's a roku 3 about 45 feet away from the router and my computer, that I have never EVER used with this computer, and when I attempted to set up googlecast, it couldn't find the thing sitting about 6 feet away, but kept asking me if I wanted to cast to the Roku on the whole other side of the house.
THAT is Plug and Play! That is what I expect as an Apple User!
I costs more, it does a lot of things I don't need, but I wouldn't trade the last few hours of frustration for $35. And then to find out it was a hopeless exercise from the start? Get it together Google, this is deceptive, this is a waste of time, this is BS. Perry S 23/2/2016, 1:30 น. Borrowed an ipad.
Took about 90 seconds to get setup and now it works (mostly) fine with my MacBook Pro. Still don't understand why this was necessary or why I wasn't forewarned that this would be an issue. Over two hours of 'pulling my hair out' level of frustration could easily have been avoided. On the one hand, I am happy that it's now working with my Mac, on the other, I'm maybe even a little more angry when I saw how easy the 'fix' was, and how easily this could all have been avoided.
Time will tell, if I'm frequently having to borrow other devices to install updates and the like, I don't see this working out, maybe an Apple TV is in my future. If now that it's set, I can forget it? It'll probably get to stay. Now that it is set up, it does seem to be working fine with the Mac. Comparing with a friend's comparable setup with an Apple TV I'd have to say that the Apple TV seemed to be near perfect, where I notice occasional moments with slight pauses and less than perfectly smooth video. It's a minor and infrequent problem, and with different networks, services and programming it's hard to say where the problem lies.
Happy enough with how the product is working, particularly considering the price difference. But don't even waste your time trying to set this thing up with some of the best computers in the world, it's hopeless until Google releases a new OS X App (the Chrome App while using OS X to USE but not Set-up the device is fine). Use, buy, or borrow a Windows, Android or even an iOS device for setup.Absolutely mind boggling. But it does work.
MattireC 7/3/2016, 16:51 น. Interesting, wish I had called customer support. I didn't even find THIS site until I was already furious. Would be curious as to what the secret was to getting the chromecast to setup with a macbook pro?
I restarted everything multiple times. Once I borrowed an ipad and linked the chromecast to my network, everything else was ready to go. But I couldn't get the Chromecast to even start the setup process with my Mac. Like I said, took less than 2 minutes with an ipad, and then it's been mostly smooth sailing with my Mac ever since.
“If you’ve woken up to find your Google Home device isn’t working properly, then you’re not alone — users are being prevented from interacting with their Google-based smart devices, and no amount of resetting and tinkering with options is fixing the problem,” Mark Jansen reports for Digital Trends. “The problem seemingly began a few hours ago and stops the user from completing any interaction with the device,” Jansen reports. “According to a thread on the r/GoogleHome subreddit, Google Home, Google Home Mini, and Chromecast devices are affected, and the issues seem to extend worldwide, with problems having been reported in the United States, Brazil, and Indonesia, as well as other countries.” “It’s pretty obvious if any of your devices are suffering from the problem. If using a Google Home, ‘Hey, Google’ commands are being followed by messages that the Home device is not yet set up, that a problem has been encountered, or a glitch occurred.
If you’re using a Chromecast, you may find that it can no longer be found for streaming — as per numerous early complaints — or that it simply refuses to boot up,” Jansen reports. “The fact that the issue is worldwide and not linked to a specific region implies that something’s gone wrong on Google’s end.” Read more in the full article.
